‘ALF’ Reboot in Development at Warner Bros. TV

‘ALF’ series lamenters may finally have closure; Variety.com reports that Warner Bros. Television is in the early stages of developing a reboot of the classic sitcom “ALF,” Variety has confirmed with sources.

No writer is yet attached to the project, which would again explore the misadventures of the titular, cat-eating ALF–which stands for Alien Life Form. In the original series, ALF of the planet Melmac crash lands in the suburbs and takes up residence with the middle class Tanner family. The show aired from 1986-1990 for four seasons and over 100 episodes on NBC. The series has remained a part of the pop culture landscape long after it ended and is frequently referenced in other shows and films.

One idea that has reportedly been discussed for the reboot would involve ALF emerging from Area 51–where he has been held captive since the original series finale–and observing how much the world has changed since that time.

That would be the easiest way to get ALF off all fifty-million “Most Tragic TV Show Endings” countdowns that the internet is so fond of. Now if only we could get Dinosaurs off that list following their “everybody dies” ending…

In regard to the new ALF series, Warner Bros. TV declined to comment.

“ALF” was created by Paul Fusco and Tom Patchett, with Fusco also serving as the puppeteer and voice behind ALF onscreen. The series also starred Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson, and Benji Gregory.

‘ALF’ may be the next in a huge line of reboots/remakes/revivals that have been announced recently. It’s hard to say which shows should or should not have the right to come back. But can you imagine ALF as a CGI creature? Maybe a ‘gritty’ 21st century version that we’re all so fond of these days? How would ALF do commenting on a world infused with the internet, social media, game cards at the arcade instead of tokens, subscription services, and everything else? Would the Tanners still be the host family, or would we move on? ALF may just be too good for this world, but may also be the perfect set of cynical eyes for the ridiculous society in which we currently inhabit.

Although eating cats might not go over so well with the younguns.

Are you ready for the return of ALF? Or is it enough of the 80s and its reboot nonsense? Tell Nerdbot about it in the comments and get the conversation going!
