The most recent wave of superhero movies has been hit or miss, to say the least. So we guess it’s time to revisit making films about villains again. DC Studios has just released its latest trailer for the upcoming Clayface film. Directed by James Watkins (Eden Lake), from a script by Hossein Amini (47 Ronin) and Mike Flanagan (The Life of Chuck).
In these short clips, we see the studio leaning towards full-body horror, with promises of more to come.
The movie centers around Matt Hagen (Tom Rhys Harries), a rising actor in Gotham City. That is, until he sleeps with a mob boss’s girlfriend and gets his face cut up as revenge. This kills his career, and he becomes desperate for a way to look like his old self again. This leads him to a scientist, Dr. Caitlyn Corr (Naomi Ackie), who injects him with a serum that yields monstrous side effects.
In the trailer, we see Matt on a plane when his face decides to turn to putty. He races to the bathroom to find his eyelid has been fused shut. He then proceeds to pull out a small pair of sewing scissors and starts moving them towards his eye. The worst part is, this is all while the plane is experiencing turbulence. The footage stops just short of the self-surgery being performed.
However, Watkins promises that his full transformation won’t be seen until the film hits theaters. It certainly wouldn’t be the first horror movie to hide the big reveal from the trailers and marketing. Jaw, Phantom of the Opera, and The Fly all famously pulled off this tactic.
Let’s see if it delivers when Clayface hits theaters on October 23rd. You can check out the trailer below:
