We Tried the New Whopper From Burger King

It was only a week or so ago that we reported on Burger King redoing the Whopper after numerous customer complaints. People had said that the Whopper has a tendency to fall apart upon attempting to eat it. Generally, this isn’t how you want your sandwich to dissolve, as it should happen in your mouth. We decided that if the king of burgers was going to try something new, we should give it a shot.

Does this new burger cut the mustard?

    The Packaging

So, as we had mentioned in our previous article, the Whopper had three main changes happening to it. First, it was now being packaged in a container as opposed to a paper wrapping. We can confirm that yes, it is indeed in cardboard packaging. Inside the box, the burger is put in a cute little half-sheath of paper, giving it that old-timey diner/fast food kind of feel. It’s nice and does keep the burger warmer for a bit longer.

    The Bun

The next big change was made to the Whopper’s bun, to make it firmer and less likely to fall apart. To that end, we guess it’s sturdier? This is the kind of change that you probably wouldn’t realize unless it was pointed out to you. If you’ve ordered different items from Burger King before, you probably know they use different buns for the Whopper as opposed to their Crispy Chicken Sandwich. The Whopper has a sesame seed bun, and the Royal Crispy Chicken has a potato bun. Big difference there, but the same can’t be said between the new and old sesame seed bun.

We can’t say it’s a negative change, but how great can a change be if it’s not that notable? This might be something we have to revisit after multiple Whoppers. Then we could chart a rate of Whoppers that have fallen apart vs. stayed together over time.

    The Mayo

The final modification that Burger King made was to introduce a creamier mayonnaise. This was completely unnoticeable. At least with the bun, you could notice it if someone pointed it out. The mayonnaise is a different matter. If they changed it at all, we couldn’t tell. For all we know, the Burger King we ate at could have run out of the new mayonnaise and used the old stuff.

    The Verdict

So, our verdict is effectively pretty neutral on the subject. The packaging is nice, but the Whopper itself has not changed enough to warrant spending the money to try it. The good news is, if you were already a Whopper fan, this is a marginal improvement and not a step back. If you didn’t like the Burger King claim to fame before this, though, it won’t convert you over.
