Netflix, Legendary Want to Remake “Land of the Lost”

If there is one universal truth about kids, it’s that they love dinosaurs. The fascination with the prehistoric beasts has permeated popular culture for decades and have made a huge imprint on film and television. That’s just one reason why Sid and Marty Krofft were able to establish a successful franchise in the form of “Land of the Lost.” The surprisingly enduring Saturday morning kid’s show saw the Marshall family of Rick and his kids Will and Holly get transported to a dimension where dinosaurs, advanced primates, and humanoid reptiles reside. While the series has had some revivals in the past, it’s set to come back again via Legendary Television and Netflix.

From 1974 to 1976, the original run of “Land of the Lost” covered three seasons while never getting an official ending. Still, the series was shown in reruns sporadically enough to get enough renewed interest to be resurrected in 1991 for a two season run on ABC. The more modern take changed the names of the characters but maintained a similar premise, complete with dinosaurs, odd crystals, and the Sleestak creatures. Oh, and of course, dinosaurs. There was also the 2009 Will Ferrell film that bombed terribly at the box office and didn’t fare well with critics. At least in that film, there was an actual ending neither of the series’ received.

Netflix and Legendary Television have secured the rights to make a new series based on the property. Reports indicate the show is so early in production, it doesn’t have a writer attached to it yet. Sid, the remaining Krofft brother as well as Marty’s daughter Deanna Krofft Pope, are set to produce the project, keeping the series very much in the family so to say. Will this new installment take after the original series, or be an updated revision with different characters like the ’90s remake? Regardless of which direction it goes, the world of “Land of the Lost” is surprisingly rich for a Saturday morning children’s show. The detail given to the mixture of fantasy and science fiction could’ve easily made it something that could appeal to adults let alone kids.

This is another one of those projects that we’ll keep an eye out for and update you as more information becomes available. In the meantime, remember, earthquakes are not just shifting of tectonic plates, they’re gateways to alternate dimensions with dinosaurs. Or at least that’s what we think the moral of the show was.
