“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” Rated PG-13 for ‘Violent Content’

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” the long-gestating sequel to Tim Burton’s 1988 film “Beetlejuice,” has just gotten a PG-13 rating. This is odd considering that the original film was only rated PG by the MPA.

The movie was slapped with a PG-13 for “violent content, macabre and bloody images, strong language, some suggestive material and brief drug use.” The thing is, “Beetlejuice,” has most of these things in it but got a more accessible rating.

Considering the film is about a deceased couple hiring a malicious spirit to drive out the family that bought their home. While presented in a campy way, the plot alone is pretty violent and macabre. Not to mention jokes about sex and more profanity than we’d probably get from a PG film today.

While the trailer makes “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” look visually and tonally similar to the first film, the sequel may be a bit darker. Since the PG-13 rating began in 1984, it certainly would have been an option with the initial rating.

The upcoming sequel will welcome back original cast members Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara. Alongside franchise newcomers Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, and Willem Dafoe. The story will reportedly pick up decades after the original film.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will hit theaters on September 6th, 2024. Check out the official trailer now:
