Dark Castle Wants to Revive “13 Ghosts” as TV Series

We love a good cult classic horror film. And we’re not talking just about the 90s standbys. The early aughts produced some cult gems that are enjoyed by horror fans the world over. “13 Ghosts” is one such movie. A remake of a 1960s film, “13 Ghosts” came out in 2001. Unfortunately, a critic score of 18% and audience score of 49% on Rotten Tomatoes tells you everything about its reception.

Which is just unfair, really. These days it’s considered a severely underrated film. With an amazing set design and fantastic ghosts, the movie deserves a lot more credit for trying to revitalize an already silly concept. And others have seen its potential. Which is why Dark Castle Entertainment, with Primordial Pictures’ Patrick Mediate and SFX supervisor Aaron McLane, is pitching “13 Ghosts” as a series for Sony Pictures Television.

You can’t deny this house was so cool — Thirteen Ghosts –

Dark Castle is also responsible for the 2001 remake of “13 Ghosts.” They clearly feel that it has significant potential in this landscape of tv shows that are basically the length that mini-series used to be. Producing the story as a television would actually give horror fans the lore that we only get hints of in the film. Each of the 13 ghosts have unique appearances and are specific to opening the portal between death and life. Almost like a tarot card deck of specters. Everyone who’s watched the movie has a favorite ghost. We like The Torso, personally. Mainly because of how freaky it is. And some didn’t get as much screen time or attention as we would have liked. The ghosts are tantalizing in the why of their existence. And we’re endlessly curious how some of them died.

All 13 Ghosts Get The Spotlight?

Apparently, the series would be structured around the ghosts themselves, delving further into their histories in a 13-episode series.

“Every culture in the world has its ghost stories, and this re-imagining of 13 Ghosts presents an international sampling of these supernatural tales,” Mediate and McLane say. “The ghost stories within each episode will have their own stylistic look and feel that will be explored and influenced by each individual director. This makes our ghost vignettes stand out stylistically as they set the theme for each episode.” That actually sounds awesome!

Obviously, nothing will happen unless Sony gives them a green light for this project. It’s been a while since we had a decent paranormal horror series. And this might give us something nice to chew on. We’ll be sure to let you know if this develops into something more. In the meantime, we might just pop our blu-ray into the player and enjoy some culty horror.
