Kit Connor Is the Right Choice to Lead the MCU’s X-Men as Cyclops

One of Marvel’s most important mutant roles, Scott Summers aka Cyclops has been found in Kit Connor. According to Deadline, Kit Connor has been cast as Cyclops for the studio’s upcoming X-Men reboot. With this announcement we’re anticipating many more to be made in the future regarding the upcoming film and we’re keeping an ear to the ground for more updates.

Why this makes sense and why we’re excited for it

For decades, Cyclops has often been overshadowed by Wolverine. He’s a fan favorite to some but many kind of kick him to the wayside. Despite serving as the tactical leader of the X-Men in the comics, he gets punted to infinity while other characters of the X-Men team are held up high on the favorites list. Mine? Well of course that’s Jubilee. I mean, I pretty much break every electronic device near me too so, twinning!

James Marsden‘s Cyclops brought a dignified performance and showed a more stoic and quietly confident portrayal to brought dignity and quiet confidence to Fox’s original films. Then it was Tye Sheridan who portrayed a younger version during the prequel era, X-Men: First Class. Unfortunately neither actor able to fully explore why Scott Summers is well Scott Summers. He’s a difficult character to like for a lot of X-Men fans. But with the announcement of Kit Connor, those who were on the fence are now ready to get their buts in theater seats.

Casting Connor shows that Marvel understands Cyclops needs to be more than the straight edged guy who happens to shoot lasers from his eyes. Hopefully Connor in this role will bring a charismatic element to the character. Enough to lead heroes with wildly different personalities, ahem, Wolverine. He needs some sort of emotional vulnerability and the ability to sell both intimate character moments and blockbuster action. We’ve seen Scott Summers in a different light watching the new X-Men ’97, but will Kit Connor bring it to that level of dramatic tension shown in it?

Well, Connor has already proven he can do exactly that.

Why Kit Connor Fits Cyclops Better Than Many Expected

Comic fans have argued for a long time that Cyclops deserves the same respect the MCU has given its other characters. Those like Captain America, Iron Man, and Black Panther. Scott Summers isn’t another superhero who you can quietly ignore. He’s a military strategist, an inspiring field commander, and one of Professor Xavier’s most trusted students. The role requires him to be capable of balancing confidence with restraint. While also not being boring about it.

For the last several years Connor has proven he can bring what Cyclops needs to the table. Rather than relying on big over the top performances, he often communicates through subtle expressions, measured dialogue, and believable emotional reactions. He does all of that in Heartstopper (a banger of a Netflix show btw). Coupled up with how he can use that experience to make Cyclops work, well we agree, he’s a perfect fit.

Heartstopper Proved Connor Could Carry an Entire Franchise

Most audiences first discovered Connor through Netflix’s Heartstopper ( I did anyway), where he played Nick Nelson opposite Joe Locke’s Charlie Spring. Heartstopper quickly became one of Netflix’s biggest critical successes. The duo, Connor and Locke earned praise for their portrayal of the characters Charlie and Nick. The heartfelt storytelling, authentic performances, and positive representation created by Alice Oseman stirred up the LGBTQ+ community who suddenly found something they could agree on, Heartstopper was everything. And rather than relying on melodrama, the show found its strength through sincerity.

Connor’s Nick Nelson begins the series as a popular rugby player trying to understand his own identity. He is trying to navigate first love, friendship, and family expectations all at one time. Which is confusing for any teenager growing up. He could have easily phoned it in so that the role became cliché, but Connor acted out every scene with genuine warmth and uncertainty.

    The timelessness of Heartstopper

Over multiple seasons, audiences watched Nick mature from a confused teenager into a confident young man who learns to support others without losing himself. His chemistry with Locke became one of the defining elements of the show. His Nelson and Locke’s Charlie brought people in after watching the first episode. And many people rewatch it yearly and have little parties to go with it.

Just as importantly, Heartstopper made Connor an international star. The show developed a loyal global fanbase that followed his career beyond Netflix. He’s become one of the most popular actors I think. Especially since I went and saw The Wild Robot in which he played an orphaned gosling named Brightbill. So he appeals to the very young as well as the um…. older generations? I mean I’m 40 so like, old old if your a teenager.

Often times Marvel has benefited from casting actors as they transition from breakout stars into leading men. Connor feels like the latest example of that strategy. And a great choice to play Scott Summers in a meaningful role that could also improve toy sales. Because yes if they make a Kit Connor Cyclops doll, I will be buying several for my dragon hoard.
