adult swim has released a teaser for the much-anticipated 7th season of “Rick and Morty.” It also confirms we’ll be getting a release date for the upcoming season next week. All while trying to avoid the elephant in the room, the new voice of the two titular characters.

The cult favorite show has undergone some major behind-the-scenes changes. Namely, co-creator Justin Roiland being fired after he was charged with several felonies related to domestic battery. Roiland voiced main characters Rick and Morty, along with several others.

Who is replacing him is still shrouded in mystery. Dan Stevens did take over Roiland’s role as Korvo on the animated series “Solar Opposites.” That is no guarantee Stevens will be doing “Rick and Morty” as well, but the rumor mill keeps turning.

The teaser really leans into the series’ increasingly dark tone. We see footage of the perpetually drunk and nihilistic Rick as he travels through different dimensions and timelines. Each time taking on evil versions of himself like the most violent game of “Where’s Waldo?” ever.

This trailer is almost completely devoid of dialogue. Instead opting for the footage to be scored by the Smashing Pumpkins’ alt-rock anthem “Bullet with Butterfly Wings.” But at the very end, we get Rick, telling Morty that they must hunt down his nemesis.

This choice could have been just a standard long set-up, like creator Dan Harmon is known for. Or it could be an attempt to minimize the appearance of the new voice(s) to keep some fan rage at bay. Which we can’t really blame them for, even if they found an actor with an identical voice, someone is still going to get super mad and very loud about it.

It is confirmed that “Rick and Morty” season 7 will see the return of performers Chris Parnell, Spencer Grammer, and Sarah Chalke.

We’ll keep you posted on news about “Rick and Morty” as it becomes available. Check out the teaser below:
