The CW Cancels “Gotham Knights,” Renews “Superman & Lois”

The CW is wrapping up its 2022-2023 season and looking ahead to next year. In May, the network had the future of three major shows up in the air. They have made the decision to cancel “Gotham Knights” and renew “Superman & Lois” and “All American: Homecoming”  for the 2023-2024 season.

Even though it got the axe, “Gotham Knights” will close out its first, and now only, season with episodes airing on June 20th and 27th. This is all part of a larger cost-cutting initiative by The CW’s new owners, Nexstar. In an attempt to make the network profitable by 2025. Even the renewed “Superman & Lois” and “All American: Homecoming” will feel the effects of these measures.

Both series will have shorter runs next season. With “Superman & Lois” getting only 10 episodes for its 4th season versus the 13 it got this year.  “All American: Homecoming”’s 3rd season will be 13 episodes, down from 15 this season.

All three shows are a product of Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions. With “Superman & Lois” being the second most watched show on The CW last year it’s really no surprise it got renewed. But the DC Comics-based series is also among the more expensive shows to make. While the also DC-based “Gotham Knights,” had a smaller audience but was significantly less expensive to produce.

These changes also mean that The CW will only be carrying over four scripted series from 2022-23. The other two are  “Homecoming”’s parent show, “All American,” and “Walker.” Both of those series are also expected to receive shorter runs. They will be mixed in with acquired series like the Canadian drama “Sullivan’s Crossing, which has already been renewed for a second season. As well as the former AMC series “61st Street.” There will also be some unscripted series in the lineup like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” and “Inside the NFL.”
