Director Sarah Polley has already achieved any filmmaker’s dream: winning an Oscar (“Women Talking“). She is apparently now looking at another dream- talking with Disney about a project of potentially epic proportions. Adapting a live-action version of “Bambi” for the screen. Polley is no stranger to adaptations, but this one might prove to be a little bit different.

To start, rather than be a one-to-one adaptation, this “Bambi” will be a musical, featuring songs written by six-time Grammy-winner Kacey Musgraves, Noah Harpster, and Micah Fitzerman-Blue. Though what can be meant by live-action in this case is making us scratch our heads a little bit. If this is anything like Disney’s remake of “The Lion King,” there’s nothing live about the action. Rather a hyperrealistic CG movie. So live-action might not be the correct term here.
“Bambi” has been in the line-up to be given a new adaptation since 2020. But, currently, talks are all that are going on. Especially with the current writer’s strike. And Disney isn’t stopping this remake train anytime soon. There are plans to adapt a number of their animated films into live-action. Disney already has their sights set on several other directors of note to helm those projects. Including, but not limited to, Jon Favreau, Kenneth Branagh, Tim Burton and Robert Zemeckis.
Against the wishes of some of us. But this seems to be Disney’s current direction. We suppose Disney decided it was high-time this current generation of youngsters knew the trauma of Bambi losing his mom to a hunter’s gun.
