Incarcerated Poacher Sentenced to Watch ‘Bambi’ Once a Month in Jail

29 year old Missouri man, David Berry Jr. is one of three men who have been incarcerated for the illegal taking of deer. We’re talking “several hundred deer” in the span of three years.

He has been sentenced to one year in jail plus 120 days for violating fire arms probation in another county. According to Lawrence County Prosecuting Attorney Don Trotter the illegal poaching that took place happened “mostly at night and only for their heads, leaving the bodies to waste.” Hunting for game is nothing new but this case is a matter of extremely gross misconduct.

The other two in the case were David Berry Sr. (father) and Kyle Berry(brother), who were being watched during an eight month investigation.  Guilty of the same crimes as David Berry Jr. they were not sentenced to watch the film as well. Perhaps because he is the youngest they think that he will be the most affected by viewing the movie.

Someone in the court system hopefully wants to change this mans mind about nature and has sentenced him to watch Disney’s Classic film Bambi as a “punishment”. Court documents state that David Berry Jr. is “to view the Walt Disney movie Bambi, with the first viewing being on or before December 23, 2018, and at least one such viewing each month thereafter, during Defendants incarceration in the Lawrence County Jail.”

Is this enough to change a mans mind about poaching? Disney films have always been at times hard to watch for those who exhibit high empathy. Especially Bambi where you see a baby deer lose his mother at a very young age. Bambi pulls on the heartstrings of many but will it be able to get through to someone who has committed such an insanely grotesque crime? Is he capable of connecting with these animals?

I suppose it all depends on whether or not he is actually sorry for what he did, or just sorry he got caught. In addition to the sentencing his fishing, hunting and trapping privileges have been revoked for life.

Do you think that a Disney movie will have any effect? Can you change a persons mind with a movie? Tell us in the comments!
