Yet another “Death Note” adaptation is coming to Netflix, but not how the previous adaptation was created. This time, a live-action series is being developed. Much like Netflix’s upcoming adaptations of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “One Piece,” this series will be produced in a similar fashion. It’s going to be coming from The Duffer Brothers‘ Upside Down production company.

Halia Abdel-Meguid is set to write and executive produce this new take. Abdel-Meguid is a long time fan of the original manga and anime series, speaks fluent Japanese, and lived in Tokyo. She is currently a consultant on Matt and Ross Duffer‘s upcoming adaptation of “The Talisman.”

    Original “Death Note” anime

In “Death Note,” a teenager comes across a notebook where if you write a person’s name in it, they die. The book has numerous rules inscribed, which are revealed throughout the series. The teen soon learns the power of the book, and a rash of mysterious deaths occur. There are repercussions for the book’s use, and the teen has to navigate around the government’s investigations of the deaths. Soon, he is joined by the original owner of the book, a demon named Ryuk, who happens to have an affinity for apples.

Tsugumi Ohba wrote and illustrated by Takeshi Obata illustrated the original manga and anime. This adaptation is said to be taking an entirely different approach to the much loved IP. That said, we still kinda hope Willem Dafoe, who played the voice of Ryuk in the poorly received live-action film, returns.

If you want to watch the original “Death Note” anime, it is currently streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll. Each platform offers it in a subbed and dubbed format.
