“Peacemaker,” Penguin Spin-off, Green Lantern Shows Saved?

The film industry and fans are still reeling from Warner Bros. Discovery axing “Batgirl” and an animated “Scoob!” sequel. Despite both films being almost finished, the movies were shelved indefinitely in favor of a tax write-off. It’s enough to cause speculation as to what other upcoming projects could be facing the chopping block. While we don’t know what all will get cancelled, reports indicate three things are still confirmed to be coming- all from the DC Universe.

    “Green Lantern” Series- Go!

Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern – Warner Bros. Pictures

Earlier this year, a Green Lantern series was announced, with Finn Whitrock cast to play Guy Gardner. HBO Max ordered 10 episodes. Well, Lantern fans have reason to rejoice as that’s one of the shows that’s still moving ahead. In a way, this is surprising considering the lack of success that Green Lantern adaptations have had. The 2021 Ryan Reynolds film is notoriously bad. The 2012 animated series was more warmly received, but canceled after one season.

    “Peacemaker” Season 2- Go!

    “Peacemaker” HBO Max

Another project reportedly still moving forward is season 2 of “Peacemaker.“ The James Gunn series was well received critically and commercially. The fact that it was a spin-off of Gunn’s successful “The Suicide Squad” film didn’t hurt either. John Cena‘s portrayal of Peacemaker was one of the film’s many highlights, and Gunn’s penchant for dark humor helped propel the character through his own titular adventure.

    The Penguin Spinoff Series- Go!

Colin Ferrell as Penguin, “The Batman” Warner Bros. Pictures

Finally, there’s the series spin-off from Matt Reeve’s “The Batman“ centering around The Penguin. Colin Farrell was virtually unrecognizable as the business-minded villain. Interestingly enough, plans for the series were made before “The Batman” hit theaters. Maybe they just had a lot of confidence in the character, maybe they just didn’t want to put all those makeup and prosthetics to waste. Either way, “The Batman” did very well at the box office, so it’s at least likely that a Penguin spin-off will gather a fair set of eyes to it.

    YouTube/DC

Given what happened to “Batgirl” and Scooby-Doo doesn’t mean any of these projects are truly safe. Frankly, we wouldn’t be surprised if the Green Lantern series never sees the light of day. We hope that’s not the case, but if Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t afraid to kill off a $90 million film from the Batman universe, what’s to stop them from shutting down a lesser tier character like Green Lantern? Here’s hoping all three series make it to our screens though; the DC Universe could use a shot in the arm right now, and these projects represent a dynamic range of content that we’re sure fans would like to see.
