Jimmy Choo’s Sailor Moon Boots: Worth the $15k Price?

To understand the fashion in “Sailor Moon,” one also has to understand the fashion of Naoko Takeuchi. Takeuchi, who created the characters, has always been a fan of high fashion. In 1992, she took inspiration from a Dior gown to create Princess Serenity’s iconic dress. But unfortunately when it comes to Naoko-approved designs, sometimes they miss the mark. Like this new collaboration with high-end designer Jimmy Choo.

As part of the 30th anniversary of “Sailor Moon” tons of new merch has come out and lots of collaborations along with it. Vans, Casetify, Sanrio and others are making cool and exclusive Sailor Moon ephemera. So how the heck does this Jimmy Choo collab completely mess that up?

The boots were created using approximately 19,000 Swarovski crystals, in a hot fuchsia color that probably won’t pair with many outfits, unless you’re bold. The rhinestones are hideous. They aren’t placed evenly, and you can see the outline of the heel. The points are emphasized in a strange way. There is very little distinction between the white part of the boot and what is supposed to be a yellow moon on the front. It honestly just looks like someone gave an intern one of those bedazzlers and let them go at it.

It also reminds me of a two part shoe. It almost looks like you put a stocking on and then put the heels on over it because of the very obvious seam.

The price tag is high. These are $15,000 designer boots, but they don’t even look like they’re made for actually wearing. Maybe some weird foot worshipper who’s into magical girls would have them displayed? But I can’t think of any case where they would be comfortable enough to cosplay in. Which is really the only case you’d want to wear something like these. Some fans would have been perfectly happy with a pair of low heels, and not a semi-stiletto boot.

Granted, most of us who’ve been following the franchise are in our mid 30s and early 40s. Not counting the younger generation who tuned in for “Sailor Moon Crystal” and stayed for more. So maybe these aren’t for everyone.

BUT if you’re interested in seeing these boots, they will be on display at the Sailor Moon Museum (in the Roppongi Museum), in Tokyo, Japan. The museum will feature many original works on display, toys, games, a cafe, a shop, and more. It runs July 1st-December 30th, 2022. Plan for about 45-60 minutes to view everything, fans will be able to view all kinds of unique creations. Photos are only allowed in specific areas.. You can buy tickets here.

And if you want to buy a pair of these Jimmy Choos for your collection, inquiries can be made here.
