Over $200k of Prop Stolen from “The Crown” Set

This is why we can’t have nice things. All we wanted to have was a period drama that documented the life and times of Queen Elizabeth II. So, Netflix took some antiques, made replicas of valuable items, put them all together- made some real nice sets. Then what happens? Someone comes along and steals over $200,000 worth of those props. While it’s not exactly stealing the crown jewels out of the Tower of London, it’s still a royal heist…in a manner of speaking!

We’ve been following “The Crown“ for quite some time, and eagerly awaiting season 5 despite the extended production time between it and season 4. We did not expect to be reporting about a theft of props that happened on set, but here we are. The theft occurred in Yorkshire overnight on Thursday, February 24th, 2022. Three vehicles were broken into.

Alison Harvey, set decorator for “The Crown,” spoke with Antiques Trade Gazette to report what items were stolen. The hope would be that spreading the word about the missing items could help return them to the production team and possibly lead to the people who stole them in the first place. Harvey stated:

“The items stolen are not necessarily in the best condition and therefore of limited value for resale… However, they are valuable as pieces to the UK film industry.”

Some of the items included 12 silver candelabra, seven gold candelabra, crystal glassware and decanters, and a replica of a 1897 Faberge coach egg. So if you happen to be in England and come across someone with a superfluous amount of candelabra, you may want to contact the local authorities.

It’s an odd theft to be sure though we have reported on others. For example, we previously discussed a case where someone stole a legendary “Magic: The Gathering” Black Lotus card worth approximately $40,000. Thieves will never stop trying to find a way to take advantage of an opening, even when that comes at the expense of the fake royal family. Still get real prison time for it though.

And also, if it’s any consolation to “The Crown” fans, production is reportedly still on track with no anticipated delays.

Seasons 1-4 of “The Crown” are available to stream now, exclusively on Netflix.
