Netflix’s “One Piece” is Alabasta Bound in Season 3

Netflix’s adaptation of One Piece is a giant anomaly, a glitch in the matrix. Going into its third season, it has proven itself a stellar exception to the rule that any venture from animation to live action is doomed to fail. The show is wildly less grounded than flopped adaptations like Netflix’s own 2021 Cowboy Bebop. Still, it succeeds in a realm of absurdity where franchises like Dragon Ball and Avatar: The Last Airbender have famously failed to find a footing. Unlike most of its predecessors, One Piece grounds itself in its source material. With a writers’ room of super-fans under the guiding hand of original creator Eiichiro Oda, Netflix has seemingly mixed its porridge just right. Season 3 adapts the highly anticipated Alabasta Arc. Fans will greet a shipload of new faces. All while setting up high stakes in the wider world of One Piece.

    Setting the Stage

By the end of Season 2, Luffy (Iñaki Godoy) and the Straw Hat Crew have firmly entrenched themselves in the first half of Grand Line waters. Water and politics, that is—throwing fisticuffs from Loguetown to Whiskey Peak. The crew thwarts tyrant king Wapol and welcomes doctor-in-training Tony Chopper (Mikaela Hoover) to the crew. But the playing field heats up as the Straw Hats befriend Princess Nefertari Vivi (Charithra Chandran). They offer her protection and vow to free her Alabastan kingdom from the grips of civil war.

What comes next in Season 3, The Battle of Alabasta, is a key to One Piece’s lore. Joe Tracz and Ian Stokes, co-showrunners and producers for Season 3, say that for many fans, “Alabasta is the arc that hooked them as nakama for life.” The arc serves as a masterful blend of series creator Oda’s “incredible talent for world-building and memorable characters,” utilizing both to create a story that’s equal parts “thematically rich, emotionally gripping, and visually spectacular.” Reaching this point in the story has always been a “dream” for the team “since the live-action series began.”

Aside from the conflict at the heart of the new season, fans will get a peek at the scope of politics and power scales within the greater Grand Line. The Battle of Alabasta’s villain, Sir Crocodile, serves as an entry point to the true powers of the region: The Seven Warlords of the Sea. Working behind the scenes with his shadowy syndicate, Baroque Works, Crocodile is the true threat behind the civil war in Alabasta and the first real test for Luffy and the Straw Hat Crew.

The Battle for Alabasta sees the return of all core cast members alongside a boatload of new blood. Recurring additions include Koza (Emilio Sakraya), a close friend of Princess Vivi. There’s Toto (Omid Abtahi), Koza’s father. Also, Pell (Jamie Ward) and Chaka (Nabeel Khan). They’re Devil Fruit users who serve as guardian deities to the Alabastan Kingdom. Additionally, this season sees the casting of Netflix’s Cobra Kai alum Xolo Maridueña as Portgas D. Ace, the sworn sibling and childhood companion of Luffy.

Fans won’t have to wait long to experience the next chapter in this global, swashbuckling phenomenon. One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta releases on Netflix in 2027.
