Jen and Sylvia Soska are working on adapting their 2012 cult hit “American Mary” into a television series. In the film, Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle), is a medical student strapped for cash. So she ends up auditioning at a local strip club. But instead of dancing, she ends up using her surgical skills to patch up an injured man brought in by the club owner’s associates. She gets the cash she needs and keeps her clothes on, all while saving a mans life. It sounds like a win all around until a sexual assault sends her into a downward spiral of underground plastic surgery. Motivated by both money and revenge her work in extreme body modification gets better while the operations become more outlandish.
Someone on Twitter asked the Soska Sisters about remaking American Mary, and suggested changing the ending so a possible sequel or mini series would work. The Sisters said they were already adapting it into a series and they are excited to “expand Mary’s world for a few seasons to really dig into her journey.”
“This was hard to keep quiet. I’m glad you finally said something,” actor/stuntman Aramis Sartorio responded. While he may not be directly involved in the project this comment does hit at some prior knowledge. Also that this has been in the works for some significant amount of time.
The Soska sisters also said, “the story that picks up where the film left off.” Which has left fans scratching their heads because (SPOILER WARNING) after performing surgery to remove a woman’s nipples and genitalia to make he a real-life Barbie, her irate partner finds Mary and stabs her. While Mary is able to kill her attacker and start stitching up her wounds she (seemingly) dies. While some fans theorize this could be a prequel, the Soskas specifying it picks up where the movie left off seems to rule that out.
There are two other potentially plausible theories circulating right now. One is that this will be based around a Mary copycat. Since it was established in the movie that she was becoming a big name in the extreme body modification scene. The other is she simply didn’t die since the police do arrive at her place rather quickly after the attack. Given that the cops were already on to her crimes, it would make sense that they could have gone out of their way to save her so she could stand trail.
At this point, the fate of Mary is still very much up in the air. As is the possible return of Katharine Isabelle to the role. While she received rave reviews for her part, and the sisters have nothing but love for her, there is no official word on if she will or even can return.
