Sony Plans to “Reboot” Live-Action “Spider-Man” Universe

Sony has had some major hits and some serious misses with its live-action “Spider-Man” extended universe. While the “Venom” franchise did extremely well, its success was drowned out by huge flops like “Madame Web,” “Kraven the Hunter,” and “Morbius.”

But shockingly, the company is looking to give it another go.

Tom Hardy, “Venom 2” Sony Pictures

During a recent interview, Tom Rothman, Sony Pictures chairman and CEO, confirmed that Sony plans for a “fresh reboot” of the “Spider-Man” extended universe.

Rothman was asked, “Where are we in the Spider-Man franchise? Not the animated Spider-Verse. Is the larger Spider-Verse dead?”

“No,” he told The Town with Matt Belloni podcast. The line of questioning continued as follows:

Interviewer: “Are you going to go back to those at some point?”

    Rothman: “Yes.”

Interviewer: “But it’ll be a fresh reboot?”

    Rothman: “Yes.”

    Interviewer: “New people?”

    Rothman: “Yes, yes.”

    “Spider-Man: No Way Home” Banned?

Earlier in the conversation, he confirmed a long-standing rumor about “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The film was, in fact, banned in China due to the climax taking place at the Statue of Liberty.

“[The China Film Administration] just said, ‘Small thing, no problem, just cut out the Statue of Liberty’ — which is where the climax is. That was their request.”

Obviously, there was no way to remove it, since the iconic landmark appears throughout the film. Which meant it was a no-go for the Chinese market.

“Also, I really didn’t look forward to sitting in front of Congress telling them why I cut the Statue of Liberty out at the request of the Chinese Communist Party,” he jokingly adds.
