5 Easy Ways to Make Your Website Template Look Custom-Made

Whether you’re a sole trader or running a small business, building a website is one of the most important things to get right. This is the place where people are going to get to know you and your brand. While on your site, they should be engaging with your message, your values, your goals, and hopefully – if you’ve done your job right – proceeding to become a loyal customer. But how do you do that job right?

    The Importance of Standing Out

Across the internet, there are currently over 1.1 billion websites, each of which are run by people with the same goals and desires as you: to get people interested in what they have to offer. When you’re creating a site and working on your content, then, you’re competing with those 1.1 billion other sites, meaning you have to find a way to stand out.

Think about when you’re on the high street. Do you take a moment to look in the shop window of stores that look plain and ordinary, and not a smidge different from the last five stores you passed? Or do you take a moment to look in the shop window of a store that looks fresh, new, exciting, and most importantly, different? Of course, the answer is the second one.

While your content might be highly engaging and your products are exemplary, if templates aren’t visually appealing – by that we mean, fresh website templates that look custom-made – it’s unlikely that potential customers are going to stick around to engage with it. The same applies to your brand’s first impression: using a distinctive visual identity, like one crafted with an AI logo generator, can instantly set your site apart from the crowd and communicate professionalism from the very first glance.

    Making Things Look Custom-Made

The phrase ‘custom-made’ is important here. When you’re creating a website, it can be so easy to simply follow the flow of the crowd, picking a tried and tested template that has performed well historically. But this is something you have to avoid.

On the contrary, even if a certain template is trending – and other websites that use it are ranked highly on Google – that doesn’t mean it will do the same for you. In fact, there’s less chance of that template reeling customers in if they’ve seen it already and know that it’s simply been copy and pasted from the next website. The last thing you want to do in the world of business is infer to your customers that you’re just like everyone else. Or even worse, lazy.

To avoid this problem, it’s so important to invest in a website template that looks custom-made, not only to reflect your brand’s identity, but also to set the tone for how your potential customers interact with your business. We mention the word ‘looks’, because it doesn’t necessarily have to be custom-made. Just so long as it gives the impression of being unique and specifically designed for your brand, it should easily be enough to build trust and reinforce the notion that you’re serious about what you do. So with this in mind, we’ve drawn up five tips to make your website template look as fresh and sparkly as possible to draw them in.

First, Focus On the Colour Palette

The first thing you need to do is pay attention to your colour palette. While it might seem like a small point, your colour scheme plays a huge role in setting the tone and mood of your site, with colours able to reflect brand values, authority, and personality. Templates often come with pre-set colour schemes, so it’s your job to change them to match your brand’s identity.

For instance, choosing a bright and energetic colour if you’re running a lively, youthful brand, or softer, muted tones if your brand is more sophisticated and calming. Colours, of course, can also evoke specific emotions, with blue often associated with trust and professionalism, while red conveys urgency and excitement. This is something else you need to think about when customising your colour palette, as well as what complementary hues to choose for accents, buttons, and background elements.

    Secondly, Customise Typography

Another aspect of the site you should be customising is typography. This goes beyond just choosing a font – it’s about setting the right tone and hierarchy on your website, going against the default font and choosing something that resonates more specifically with your brand’s voice. With numerous online tools, you have the opportunity to customise font size, line heights, and spacing to improve readability, working to give your website a distinguished and polished look in an online world that seems to constantly gravitate towards Georgia, Arial, and Roboto.

    Thirdly, Input Your Images

Did you know that the average time people spend on a website is around 5 to 10 seconds? That gives you a minimal amount of time to capture their attention and engage them in a way that makes them want to stay, and this is most efficiently done through images.

Colours and text are important, there’s no doubt about that, but the majority of internet users are drawn initially to obvious visuals – high quality, relevant images that communicate the brand message and the reason they’re there in the first place: your products or services. This is also important when it comes to customisation.  On average, images make up 50% to 75% of the total content on a website, and this is largely due to the fact they’re the best way to showcase a unique brand – with images showcasing the products, team, or the lifestyle associated with the service.

    Fourth, Work On Your Layout

In 2025, most templates come with fixed layouts that often look too structured or rigid. It’s your job to break away from these layouts by tweaking the layout and making it look more dynamic and custom. Adjust the number of columns, the arrangement of elements, and the spacing between them to create a balanced and more visually engaging design.

For example, you could make your homepage far more engaging with asymmetrical layouts or full-width sections for key elements. Or use whitespace strategically to create breathing room around the content, giving your site a more modern, uncluttered feel. By experimenting with these adjustments, it’s possible to create a design that feels a little more personalised, and stands out amongst other website templates that, as we mentioned previously, feel blocky and rigid.

    Lastly, Go Interactive

One last easy way to make your website template look custom made is to incorporate some interactive elements. By this we mean, adding features like hover effects, animations, interactive infographics, or smooth scrolling. All of these elements can work to engage visitors and create a more dynamic experience which, subsequently, makes the site feel more unique and tailored. Not only this, but interactive elements are being used more and more to enhance usability and make websites more visually appealing.

    Conclusion

As the digital landscape continues to evolve – and interactivity becomes more of a priority for users – it’s important that you’re not left behind and you’ve put in the steps now to make your site as interactive and user-friendly as possible. When all is said and done – and your website is looking beautiful and custom-made – keeping it up-to-date and user-friendly is the most important thing for the future. By doing it now, you’ll get a good head start and enter the online space while telling people you’re going to stick around.
