Say what you will about the overall quality of Adam Sandler‘s filmography, but no one can deny the force that he was in the mid to late ’90s. While some could easily argue that “Billy Madison” was the film that broke him into big screen success, it was “Happy Gilmore” that truly elevated him. It’s what lifted him from being a former SNL star to a Hollywood heavyweight. That’s why when we reported on “Happy Gilmore 2“ being confirmed, we weren’t immediately repulsed by the idea of another Adam Sandler film.
Thanks to Netflix dropping another teaser for the upcoming movie, we also know when it’s going to hit the streaming service.

If you’re wondering what this sequel film is going to be about, this trailer is not going to do you any favors in that regard. All we know is that Happy states that he hasn’t swung a club in years and he’s presumably still in a relationship with Virginia Venit, once again being played by Julie Bowen. It seems as if Happy is having to return to the world of golf and given that one scene appears to show him moving out of a house, maybe he’s not in the best financial shape.

Along the way we get to see Christopher McDonald shouting into the rain as Shooter McGavin and Ben Stiller returning as the orderly, Hal, from the nursing home that Happy’s grandmother was staying in. Incidentally, Happy’s grandma was played by the late, great, Frances Bay, who passed away in 2011. (Sidenote, we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention that Bay frequently popped up in David Lynch projects as well, cementing her awesomeness). We wouldn’t be surprised if her character’s passing isn’t referenced in the film and may be a plot point.

If there’s one thing noticeably absent from the trailer, it’s laughter. This is a decidedly not funny teaser. Set to the previously used song “Magic” by Pilot, the whole thing is more sentimental and nostalgic than it is comedic. Which is just fine to be honest. Too often trailers are guilty of showing off the funniest parts of a film and that’s definitely not a concern here. The only real gag is of Happy accidentally destroying a virtual golf machine by hitting the ball through the equipment. Har har.
We really hope this sequel turns out well; the first “Happy Gilmore” holds a special place in a lot of our hearts as a kind of comfort film that has always felt good to go back to. Regardless of the quality though it’s easily going to do huge numbers on day one for Netflix; that’s pretty much a given.
We’ll just have to see if it’ll live up to the former when “Happy Gilmore 2“ debuts on July 25th, 2025. Watch the teaser now:
