The Rise of Islamic Therapy: What You Need to Know

Over the past few years, the mental health discourse has changed globally, and that has served to make therapy accessible to more people. What is popular too is the faith based method as people get more conscious of their emotional and psychological needs. Islamic therapy is one of these approaches and is an example of a therapeutic model, which is integrative of contemporary psychological practices and Islamic teaching in providing a culturally shared and spiritually-based healing direction.

    What does Islamic Therapy entail?

Islamic therapy is an approach to counseling, which assimilates the teachings of the Quran, Sunnah (Prophetic traditions), and Islamic spirituality with scientifically backed methods of psychology. In contrast to the general therapy that can be secular or clinical, Islamic therapy focuses on the relationship between pathological conditions of emotion and spiritual development. It urges the clients to pursue their faith as a means of strength and healing and remains true to the therapeutic direction with Islamic principals.

The tools of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), person-centered therapy, and mindfulness are commonly employed by therapists following this approach, who make their sessions based on the belief that the real healing process can be advanced by the ability of self-reflection and the connection to Allah.

The Reason Islamic Therapy is on the Rise?

There are a few reasons that explain the increased attention to Islamic therapy. To begin with, a good number of Muslims across the world are bound by cultural or religious hindrances to accepting conventional therapy. They can also be misinterpreted or condemned because of their faith-based ideas. The Islamic treatment treats such issues by identifying a safe, non-judgmental environment under which an individual can be free to express him or herself, and remain loyal to his or her religious affiliation.

In addition, with the increased number of Muslim therapists and digital platforms that provide faith-based therapy, such support has been promoted as never before. Muslims can seek mental health services by using mobile apps or attending online counseling sessions, even though previously, they had limited reasons to do so.

    Important elements of Islamic Therapy

The Islamic therapy has its foundations on beliefs, which promote the use of spiritual practices in the healing process. Daily prayer (salah), remembering Allah (dhikr), and trusting in Allah (tawakkul) are some of the activities that are in most cases prescribed with the normal therapy exercises.

Furthermore, during the therapy sessions, therapists can introduce Quran verses touching upon the subject of patience, forgiveness, or selfworth and make the clients transform the negative thinking patterns by applying the Islamic pattern. The incorporation of the substance with cognitive restructuring and mindfulness enables the method to be clinically efficacious and spiritual.

    Who Should Islam Therapy Help?

The Islamic therapy does not exhaust those who are very religious. It is particularly helpful to:

    • Depressed or traumatized Muslims Muslims who have anxiety
    • Individuals in identity or cultural dilemmas as converts
    • Muslims in non-Muslim communities who want religious help
    • Any person who wants a therapy, which recognizes mental and spiritual well-being

Even when the religious inclination is not high, people usually feel comforted by the fact that their worldview is respected and their religion is part of their (healing) journey.

    Locating a sensitive Islamic Therapist

When seeking Islamic therapist not only will you need to verify their credentials in terms of clinical as well as in terms of their grasp on the Islamic doctrines. An effective counselor is supposed to have a license in mental health counseling and be a good acquaintance of Islamic ethics. Numerous therapists post their services in websites and apps that specialize in connecting to the Muslim community, providing both in person and online appointments.

Just like any other therapeutic relationship, confidentiality, good level of professionalism and compatibility are important.

    Myths About Islamic Therapy

A popular misconception is that Islamic therapy is just a treatment of religious or spiritual problems. As a matter of fact, it addresses a broad scope of issues, including stress and grief, relationship issues and self-esteem.

The other myth is that it is not real therapy. As a matter of fact, Islamic therapy is supported by science in regard to psychological science and at the same time it holds religious values hence it is both reasonable and merciful.

    Future Islamic Therapy

The need of Islamic therapy can also be predicted to rise as the knowledge of mental health in Muslim populations keeps increasing. Educational resources, training programs and books are being created so as to guide the new generation of Muslim therapists. In addition, online therapy services are becoming a more convenient way to have access to everything regardless of the location an individual resides.

    Conclusion

Islamic treatment fills in the gap between mental health and spirituality with a whole-person approach to healing. More Muslims will seek assistance that corresponds to their values, and this will keep increasing in significance. Be it a problem arising out of emotions or just a recourse to find a balance, Islamic therapy offers one sure way to help feed the heart and the soul as well.
