As you might expect from a website called Nerdbot, there are things we tend to “nerd out” about. Of those many things, “Constantine” is one of them. We’re not just talking about the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves, we’re also talking about the character as featured in comics, the criminally short-lived TV series, his appearances in the Arrowverse shows, you name it. But yes, that 2005 film still holds a special place in our hearts and we’ve reported about its potential sequel more than a few times over the last several years. Imagine then, our happiness when director Francis Lawrence dropped some news about said sequel.

Back in July of 2024, Reeves appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and said everyone was on board, they were just waiting for a script. (It was on Colbert’s show a few years prior when Reeves was asked what role he’d like to revisit. His answer? John Constantine.)
“I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing,” Lawrence told Collider. “And Akiva (Goldsman,) Keanu, and I are super, super excited about it. We have gone through a bunch of the comics over the years and looked at things. I will say that there’s probably grains from things that we’re pulling, but in truth, most of it is just coming from the three of us…”
That makes it sound like whatever adventure is in the cards for the occult detective won’t be a direct adaptation of an existing storyline, but something more inspired by the comics.
We’d love to see the film happen. But, all the parties involved have a lot on their plates. Lawrence is working on an adaptation of “The Long Walk,” a “Bioshock” movie for Netflix, and another film set in the “Hunger Games” franchise (this one another prequel, about Haymitch’s games). Goldsman is penning the script for “Practical Magic 2,” and Keanu Reeves is, well, Keanu Reeves; between acting and music, the man’s busy.
Still, if the stars align for Constantine to officially return, we’ll let you know.
