In 2005, the supernatural thriller “Constantine” starring Keanu Reeves hit theaters. Based on the DC Comics title of the same name, the story of exorcist John Constantine soon became a cult classic. For years there have been rumblings of a sequel, which producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura just confirmed has a script, but he’s “too scared” to read it.
“You know it’s in my inbox right now,” he told ComicBook about the “Constantine 2” script. “Funny enough, I’m too scared to read it, though. I want it to be good so bad. I probably read it in the next few days. When I get on an airplane.”
With original cast members Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton on board to return alongside director Francis Lawrence (“Hunger Games“), this is a huge step in the right direction.
DCEU Relaunch
One of the complications is the relaunch of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) under DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran. Given the first “Constantine” film took place before the launch of the connected DC cinematic universe, this may not create a huge issue story-wise. But the relaunch does have DC Studios’ release calendar jam-packed with big-name titles. Namely, 2025’s Gunn-directed “Superman,” starring David Corenswet.
“I don’t know. I’m not as intricately involved in it as others. So I’m not sure what state we’re at right now,” said Bonaventura in 2023 when asked where things stand with “Constantine 2.” We’re assuming the song remains the same with the new movie in relation to the overall universe.
We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Constantine 2” as they become available. The first film is currently streaming on Prime Video.
