Armie Hammer to Star in Uwe Boll’s “The Dark Knight”

There is so much to unpack in the above headline that it’s hard to know where to start. Do you begin with Armie Hammer showing up in a headline about starring in a film? We all thought he was gone after everything that happened with accusations of abuse and fantasied cannibalism. See, a lot to unpack just there. Or do we start with film director Uwe Boll? A director who once challenged his detractors to boxing matches. And what’s with “The Dark Knight?” Is this about Batman? Let’s try to pick this apart.

Maybe it’s best to start with Uwe Boll. This German director has been responsible for a tremendous amount of terrible films, many of them based on video games. “House of the Dead,” “Alone in the Dark,” “BloodRayne,” “Postal,” “Far Cry;” these are all films he directed that were critical and commercial atrocities. It’s also just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to films he’s churned out. So really, the guy has nothing to lose in terms of any kind of reputation. In fact, he’s exactly the type of filmmaker who could pretty much cast whoever he wants and it won’t make a difference.

Enter Armie Hammer. The actor has fallen hard thanks to accusations of abusive relationships with women and some interesting fantasies of cannibalizing people. Hammer was laying low for a while, popping up on the podcast of a friend last year to state he was working on self-improvement and writing. If he has been improving in his life, good for him. But regardless of how bad you need or want an acting job again, appearing in a Uwe Boll film could hardly be considered a step-up in life.

So here we come to “The Dark Knight.”

Not only is Boll directing the film but writing it too. Not to be confused with Batman at all, this story is about “a vigilante who seeks his own form of justice by taking down criminals.” Totally not Batman though. Not connected at all. In fact, Boll says there’s no danger of them being confused with one another. Makes you wonder why he decided to use “The Dark Knight” as a title at all.

Filming is slated to begin later this month in Croatia.
