It’s International Cat Day, so what better way to celebrate than list some of our favorite cats from movies and TV? Our furry feline friends have been companions through adventures, or had their own adventures. With so many great cats that are stars in their own right, it was hard to pick which ones deserved the spotlight more. Here is Nerdbot’s Top 10 cats from movies and TV.
1 10.) Mrs. Norris from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone“(2001)
Mrs. Norris is the diligent cat that assists Mr. Filch in watching for students roaming the castle at night. This cantankerous old cat could give any guard dog a run for their money. She may have been petrified in the second film, but she survived and continued patrolling the castle grounds.
2 9.) Thackery Binx from “Hocus Pocus” (1993)
With spooky season around the corner, we couldn’t forget to mention Thackery Binx. The boy turned cat after failing to save his sister, captured everyone’s hearts. Without his help, the Sanderson Sisters may not have been defeated. While many were crushed that he did not survive the encounter, it was touching he was reunited with his sister in the end.
3 8.) Mr. Bigglesworth from “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” (1997)
While his fur may not have survived being cryogenically frozen, Mr. Bigglesworth did survive. The feline companion to Dr. Evil may have only had a bit part, but it speaks volumes the villain wanted his cat with him. Mr. Bigglesworth was even cloned so that Mini Me has his own companion.
4 7.) The Cat from “Coraline” (2009)
This wise cat, voiced by Keith David, is quite the adventurous companion. He assists Coraline in defeating the Other Mother, as he can travel between the two worlds. Just don’t call him a “wuss-puss,” or he won’t be inclined to help you.
5 6.) Lucifer from “Cinderella” (1950)
This evil feline causes so much mischief, it would be criminal to not include him. Lucifer aids his owner Lady Tremaine and her daughters in making Cinderella’s life miserable. But he’s so fluffy you want to forgive him.
6 5.) Oliver from “Oliver & Company” (1988)
This little kitten has a big adventure in the Big Apple with his canine pals. The whole movie you can’t help but sympathize with the little guy. Everything works out with a happy ending as he is adopted by the sweetest girl and keeps his friends.
7 4.) The Aristocats from “The Aristocats” (1970)
This may be technically cheating, but can anyone just pick ONE cat from this movie? This adorable feline family may live in the lap of luxury, but they have friends in the jazzy underbelly of Paris. Plus, who wouldn’t want to be a fabulous wealthy person and leave everything to their cats?
8 3.) Garfield from “Garfield and Friends” (1988)
The notorious Monday hating, lasagna loving cat is a favorite of many. He may have started as a comic strip character, but he’s had several movies and shows. Living with his owner Jon and canine sidekick Odie, this sarcastic cat would rather lay in bed. Garfield, voiced by Lorenzo Music, will always remain a household name.
9 2.) Goose from “Captain Marvel” (2019)
We know that Goose is technically a Flerken and not an actual cat, but he’s still an adorable feline. Gosse comes in handy keeping the Tesseract safe from the Kree. Plus we can’t forget the memorable scene of Goose being the one to take Nick Fury’s ( Samuel L. Jackson) eye.
10 1.) Jonesy from “Alien” (1979)
While Jonesy may have had a small part to play, who can forget the only other survivor of “Alien” from 1979. The orange tabby managed to escape the Xenomorph with his new owner, Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver). The two were the only surviving crew members of the Nostromo.
11 Honorable Mentions
How could we NOT mention “Sailor Moon” mainstay Luna! We also feel Lucky, the cat from “Alf,” who avoided getting eaten by the Melmacian during the series, deserves some love. And, of course, Angela’s poor Sprinkles from “The Office.”
