Director Todd Phillips finished shooting “Joker: Folie à Deux,” the much-anticipated sequel to his 2019 film “Joker.” In celebration, he posted an announcement accompanied by photos of Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in character. Phillips has been very hush-hush about the production, and has only shared a few official photos from the film.
“That’s a wrap,” the post reads. “Thanks to these two (+ the entire cast) and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together.”
Phoenix will be reprising his Oscar-winning performance as Arthur Fleck for “Folie à Deux.” In the first film, Fleck is an aspiring comedian battling some serious mental health issues. We watch as he slowly slides down the rabbit hole of becoming one of DC Comic’s most notorious villains, The Joker.

Oscar nominee Gaga will be playing Joker’s on-and-off girlfriend, Harley Quinn. Phillips hasn’t outright said it but on Valentine’s Day, he posted an image of Gaga and Phoenix in character. The post says “Happy Valentine’s Day,” and looks like they are about to kiss. For many, this confirmed the speculation about her role in the film.
Plot details are also few and far between but it is reported to be a musical. And the first teaser image Phillips posted more or less confirmed part of it would take place in Arkham Asylum. A notorious prison/institution in the DC Universe that houses some of Batman’s worst foes.
But the biggest clue about the film’s plot is in the title. Folie à Deux is a medical term that refers to an identical or similar mental disorder that affects 2 or more individuals at the same time. Not only is The Joker seemingly leaning into his madness, he is also taking someone [most likely Harley] with him.

“Joker: Folie à Deux” from Warner Bros. will hit theaters on October 4, 2024. We’ll keep you updated on any breadcrumbs Phillips is willing to give us.
