“Joker: Folie à Deux” director Todd Phillips shared a teaser image from the first day of filming. “Folie à Deux” will be the much-anticipated musical sequel to Phillips’ 2019 hit film, “Joker.” The director shared the image to his official Instagram account. It was simply captioned “Day 1. Our boy. #joker.” In the picture, we see Joaquin Phoenix returning to the role of Arthur Fleck.
While plot details for “Joker: Folie à Deux” remain a closely guarded secret this image does back up a few details we already knew. Fleck is shown reclining while having his face shaved by someone in a tan uniform. This seemingly confirms “Folie à Deux” will take place with Fleck in prison at the infamous Arkham Asylum. The person shaving him is most likely a prison guard which explains the uniform. It also seems that Phoenix has also regained a wiry physique, meaning the character of Fleck will have changed very little in terms of build since the last film.
Actress Zazie Beetz will reportedly be reprising her role as Sophie Dumond from the R-rated original. Phoenix and Beetz will be joined by actress/singer Lady Gaga, playing DC Comic villain/the Joker’s on-again-off-again girlfriend, Harley Quinn. Brendan Gleeson (“Mr. Mercedes“) is also on cast. But there still seems to be no confirmation on who he will be playing. The script is co-written by Scott Silver, who also wrote the first film.
With the wild success of the first film, it’s not really surprising that the team would want to keep details sparse. “Joker” is the fourth highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time with over $1 billion in ticket sales. It received 11 Academy Award nominations, and took home 2 Oscars for Best Actor (Phoenix) and Best Score (Hildur Gudnadottir).
“Joker: Folie à Deux” is set to hit theaters on October 9, 2024, exactly five years after the release of the “Joker.”
