“Homeland” co-creators/executive producers Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa will be returning to SHOWTIME. They are teaming up to write a new series based on the 1997 film, “Gattaca.”

“Gattaca” is a dystopian science fiction thriller written and directed by Andrew Niccol. It takes place in a future society driven by eugenics, where children are conceived through genetic selection to ensure they have the best possible hereditary from their parents. Ethan Hawke stars as Vincent Freeman, who was conceived outside the eugenics program. Freeman struggles to overcome genetic discrimination, to realize his dream of going into space. The film also stars Uma Thurman and Jude Law.

The new “Gattaca” series will be written by Gordon, Gansa, along with Craig Borten. It takes place a generation after the events in the 1997 film. In this not too distant future, genetic engineering has run amuck to the point where parents can determine the future of their children before they are even born. These children come to be known as the Valids. By default, this creates a new underclass, no longer determined by social status or race, the Invalids. Companies have also started screening their employees, based on their genetic makeup.

It will follow the story of a man with a congenital heart condition, who desperately tries to assume the identity of a former athlete with perfect genes, all in order to fulfill his dream of going into space.

Gordon and Gansa will also be executive producing along with Glenn Gellar, and Danny DeVito. DeVito was also a producer on the original film. There is no release date set for the “Gattaca” series. But we will keep you posted on updates as they become available.
