How to Play Top Lane in League of Legends?

Understanding your role in League of Legends is one of the ways you can ensure victory for your team. When we say role, we don’t think about whether you have a character with a tank or a support role. Instead, we are talking about everything a player should do in an offensive and defensive approach.

You don’t need to pay attention to your character build but also to the lane you’re playing at the beginning of the match. To get as much experience and gold as possible, dominating the opponents in the lane is essential. Here, we want to show you how you can do it on the top lane.

    Choosing the Right Champion

If you compare all three lanes on the map, you will see that the top one is the longest. With that in mind, nobody should be surprised that this is where tanks and high-damage characters usually meet. Usually, players start having quarrels at the beginning of the match.

There are several approaches you can undergo when it comes to the top lane. For instance, you can start playing as a tank. With a long lane, being a tank is beneficial for crowd control. When your champion can stun an enemy with a long road to go, chances of getting a kill are pretty high.

Another approach has a character who can summon additional minions. By doing so, players can get the upper hand on the lane and be able to tear down the tower as soon as possible. Destroying the tower in the early phase of the game is exceptional since it provides players with a lot of resources.

    Retain Teleport Advantage

Teleport advantage is an important segment of playing at the top lane. Fights that will occur will have different impacts on the game as a whole. Therefore, you will need to escape the fights in some cases for a simple reason, not to give your opponents a chance to get more resources and experience to beat you.

At the same time, you should also be able to help your teammates in other lanes. As we all know, the top lane is quite a long one, and waiting for the champion to reach the other ones is quite long. That’s why teleport is essential; using it in crucial moments can give you a serious advantage over your opponents.

To have this advantage, you should avoid all the fighting that can endanger your position. But, of course, it doesn’t mean players on the top lane should avoid every conflict. Instead, they need to play it smartly since their teammates need them, and dying for nothing will not benefit anyone.

    Trading in Top Lane

The next way for you to dominate the top lane is to trade properly. In this case, trading means you want to inflict as much damage to the opponent as possible and receive as little as possible in return. In the beginning, much of this will depend solely on the champion. Of course, ranged ones will inflict much more damage than melee.

Therefore, ranged characters have a slight advantage over melee. Still, this is not the only aspect that plays a role in trading. When you scratch the surface, you shall see that it has much to do with the character’s abilities. A lot of trading is a part of wave management as well.

While the combination of trading and wave management looks simple, it isn’t. For instance, you should calculate the right time to inflict damage while your minions surround you. On the other hand, we wouldn’t recommend it if you lose a couple of them and will not inflict sufficient damage.

    Warding

Taking all the measures of precaution in the top lane is an absolute must. As we’ve said, it is a long lane, and ensuring your safety is possible through a couple of approaches. The one we want to talk about is known as warding. Warding means placing a totem that provides visibility over a certain part of the map.

If the totem remains untouched, it will last two and a half minutes. Of course, there are a couple of crucial places where you need to place wards in the top lane. The first one is located between two bushes located just below the lane. The second one is a bush just above the lane closer to the bottom tower.

By placing wards in these two places, you will have complete visibility on that part of the map. So, it is possible to monitor the movements of the enemies and spot whether they are planning a surprise attack or not. You should always remind yourself to renew the wards when their lifespan is over or they are destroyed.

    Don’t Roam into the River

Differently from all other lanes, the top one gives players the most headaches when escaping a certain conflict. It’s because of the river, and if they get caught in it, chances of survival are rather small. Most players are curious enough to check whether scuttle crab is out there or something else.

Remember, doing so is a dangerous risk since the lane is long and there are few boundaries. An ambush planned by the opposite team can cost your champion’s life in seconds. Therefore, we advise those who play in the top lane to stay within the way their minions go.

Of course, there are situations when you will be planning these ambushes. However, going to the river part on your own, without the support of your teammates, is easily one of the most dangerous things you can do. Some time ago, there was a trend of ambushing champions immediately at the beginning of the game.

    In Conclusion

League of Legends is not easy to master because of its numerous aspects. Each of the map’s three lanes comes with conditions players need to meet. Here, we’ve discussed the top one in greater detail. We’re sure you will find this insight to be helpful.
