Justin Timberlake Files Injunction to Stop Release of DUI Footage

To what end do people have a right to privacy? It’s an issue that has popped up numerous times in Supreme Court cases, Constitutional Law, workplace monitoring, and police footage. It’s the latter of these that is being brought up in court by Justin Timberlake. The singer would like the public to forget he was arrested in 2024 for driving under the influence of alcohol. There’s plenty of footage of that arrest that media outlets would like to get their hands on.

Timberlake and his legal team are filing an injunction to stop that.

    Caught on Camera

To be fair, there’s virtually no one who would like their worst moments taped for the public to see. We’ve seen this happen with celebrities before in audio and video form. For example, Reese Witherspoon faced backlash after her 2013 arrest for DUI. She was caught on video accosting the police officer and trying to throw her fame in his face. She fully admitted to it being an embarrassing and dumb moment. However, we’re sure she’d have preferred it not become a public spectacle either.

This applies to everyday people, too. Several YouTube channels, for example, have been able to make names for themselves by featuring police body cam footage of them responding to disorderly people. Sometimes these individuals are drunk, high, or suffering from a mental health condition. These people also likely do not want these moments shared for all to see. Is it right for others to marvel at their irrational actions? Again, these are issues where a person could be going through one of the worst days of their life, and we just so happen to see it caught on camera because of their stupid actions.

    Timberlake’s Injunction

These individuals don’t have the resources that someone like Timberlake does, which is what makes this situation so ridiculous. In September of 2024, Timberlake was pulled over after running a stop sign and failing to stay in his lane. Timberlake and his attorneys claim that the police in the village of Sag Harbor have over 8 hours of videotape of him.

They state the recordings include not just the arrest, but footage which “encroaches on areas of [Timberlake’s] life and emotional state that have no relevance at all to [Timberlake’s] arrest.” Maybe it does, or maybe that’s just language being used to describe embarrassing behavior that Timberlake doesn’t want disclosed to the public.

Right now, Timberlake’s goal is to establish a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order on Sag Harbor, releasing the footage. The request is for the court to review the footage during the scope of the injunction and restraining order. While some of the footage may well be a matter of public record, the hope is that the court will watch it and then exclude a majority of the material.

It’s not an unreasonable request; it’s just unfair that he has the resources to do this while other people do not. In a fair and just world, this is the kind of case that could work its way up to the Supreme Court and change the way people’s privacy is protected by the law.

We’ll see what happens as this case continues.
