Disney Cancels Live-Action Robin Hood Remake After Years in Development

Disney’s not shy to remake beloved films into live-action versions. They’ve done everything from Snow White to Lilo and Stitch. Currently they’re working on a live-action Moana. So when it was announced in 2020 we kind of just accepted the reality that yet another classic Disney film would get the live-action treatment.

Originally announced in 2020 for Disney+, this project was intended to be a photorealistic musical hybrid of live-action and CGI. It would have been interesting to see what they would do with it. They could have leaned heavily into the furry aesthetic. Heck I know a bunch of folks who would have jumped at the chance to get an official Robin Hood or Maid Marian fox tail.

Now we know from Director Carlos López Estrada that the announced remake of Robin Hood will not be moving forward. During an AMA (Ask me Anything) on Reddit Estrada was asked about the live-action Robin Hood that was supposedly still in development.

    “It’s dead, sadly,”

“I say sadly because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.”

    López Estrada

The already had plans that were pretty firm in place. Those tapped to work on the project reimagining the 1976 animated classic were already familiar with Disney’s previous work with remakes. The studio had chosen Keri Granlun who wrote the Lady and the Tramp remake to write the new screenplay adaptation. Justin Springer who produced Dumbo (2019) was also set to produce the Robin Hood remake.

Those who are familiar with Robin Hood (1976) had mixed feelings initially. Everything was getting the live-action treatment when this was announced in 2020. Fans of Disney’s renaissance era, 101 Dalmatians, Jungle Book, Aristocats etc, probably would have watched this. Even if it was just out of morbid curiosity.
