“Community” is one of those shows that never really widely caught on, but resonated with enough people to become a cult classic. That journey wasn’t without its struggles though. Between issues with star Chevy Chase, the temporary ousting of show creator Dan Harmon, and cancellation by NBC, it looked like “Community” would never hit its goal of “six seasons and a movie.” Well, the sixth season did happen, a movie is in the works, and despite initial concern about the casting, it looks like one of the main stars will be returning!
When news broke about the “Community” movie finally being made, there were some notable omissions from the cast. Chase was one of them, but the reasons were painfully obvious to anyone who followed the show. More notable was the lack of Yvette Nicole Brown and Donald Glover. Both of them saw “Community” serve as a spring board to their careers, launching them into a tremendous amount of success. With Glover, it seems some particulars have been worked out, and he will be returning.
Dan Harmon confirmed Glover would not only be in the film, but Harmon “would not want to think about making [the movie] without Donald.” As for the omission from the initial announcement, Harmon admits “there was a ball fumbled.” A pretty big ball to fumble; sounds like more of a contract negotiation. Either way, we’ll be seeing the return of Troy Barnes when the “Community” film eventually comes to Peacock.
It is a big deal to get Glover back, considering his rise to prominence since the community college sitcom ended its run in 2015. Along with high profile roles like that of Lando Calrissian in “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” and the voice of Simba in “The Lion King” remake, Glover has also been helming his own show “Atlanta” since 2016. Additionally, he’s also had a successful music career under his alter-ego Childish Gambino. With “Atlanta” having entered its final season earlier this year though, perhaps this gave Glover the opening he needed in his schedule to be able to revisit his old role alongside his “Community” co-stars.
As of right now the film is currently being written. There is no expected release date. It’s still unknown if Yvette Nicole Brown will be returning. You can currently stream “Community” on Hulu, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. Oddly not Peacock. Streaming wars are something else, aren’t they? We’ll let you know what else we hear about this and other news.
