“Are We Not Men? We Are DEVO!” Netflix has acquired the rights to the documentary “DEVO,” about the beloved genre-crossing band.

The film, directed by Chris Smith, premiered during the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.

“DEVO” follows members Mark Mothersbaugh, Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, Bob Casale, and Alan Myers through the band’s formation to the present. They formed in 1973 after witnessing the 1970 Kent State shootings. A tragedy where the Ohio National Guard opened fire during a protest against the Vietnam War, claiming four lives.

This horrible event helped shape their “de-evolution” ideology. By 1980, DEVO was dominating the airwaves with the hit song  “Whip It.” This documentary tells the story of their rise through rare archival footage and interviews with members and those close to them.

    More DEVO

To help promote the documentary, DEVO will be re-releasing high-definition restorations of their music videos. Calling this bi-weekly series of releases the Devolutionary Times. Each release will take place on YouTube, starting July 7th, and will run through November 10th.

“The films and videos are newly restored to pristine quality ready to jump off your laptops or mobile devices! Get ready for a Cornucopia of DEVO!!!!” says Gerald.

They will also be putting out “The Truth About De-Evolution,” a 10-minute short film directed by Chuck Statler from a script by Gerald and Mark. It will feature the surrealist visuals the group is known for and includes the songs “Secret Agent Man” and “Jocko Homo.”

But for fans that want a more real-world experience, DEVO will be embarking on the farewell “Cosmic De-Evolution Tour.”

“DEVO” will hit Netflix on August 19th. Tickets to the “Cosmic De-Evolution Tour” are available here. You can check out the Devolutionary Times music video release schedule below:
