Sigourney Weaver Thinks “Working Girl” Reboot is “Fantastic Idea”

It was recently announced that Selena Gomez is looking to produce a “Working Girl” reboot based on the 1988 Mike Nichols-directed comedy. The original film’s cast included Sigourney Weaver, Melanie Griffith, and Harrison Ford. It tells the story of an ambitious 30-something secretary Tess (Griffith), who is working in Staten Island. Tess pitches a great idea but her boss, Katharine (Weaver), tries to take credit for it. So when Katharine breaks her leg, Tess uses the opportunity to steal it back by pretending she has her boss’ job. The original “Working Girl” earned six Oscar nominations and $100 million at the global box office.

Weaver accepted a Legends Award at Elle’s Women in Hollywood event on October 17th. When asked about her thoughts on the “Working Girl” reboot she gave an enthusiastic response. “Go for it. I think it’s a great instinct to want to do that again,” Weaver said. “It’s a kind of eternal story, you know. But seen in the new light, it’s especially interesting to think of Katharine double-crossing her assistant in today’s world. It would be worse, wouldn’t it? It would really suck. So I don’t know, I’m really excited to see it.”

When asked if she’d have any desire to appear in Gomez’s revival, she said she “wouldn’t force myself on them. I can’t think of what I’d be playing except the old person who runs the agency going by with a cane, [but] I’m sure she could think up anything.”

It is still unconfirmed if Gomez herself will be starring in the new film adaptation of “Working Girl” or just remaining behind the camera as a producer. This reboot will be through 20th Century Studios and already has Ilana Pena, creator of “Diary of a Future President,” adapting the script.
