There’s something about making a song your own. Or creating something that could be from the past with something current. Now thanks to Hildegard Von Blingin’ we can enjoy Foster the People’s “Pumped Up Kicks” played on lutes and sung to the tune of medieval wording.
The lyrics are beautifully done and they are translated from things like “Better run, better run, outrun my gun” to things like, “best ye go, best ye go, outrun my bow”. It’s entirely clever and something that I never expected to happen upon if not for YouTube recommendations.
Another thing that came out this year was a Frank Sinatra version of Britney Spears “Toxic“. That one in and of itself was weird only because they had a computer create it. I feel like this version of “Pumped Up Kicks” is actually much better because you can tell that it was written and performed by a real human being.
They’ve also done many other covers that are really great to put on and let people realize what they are. Sure it’s kind of trolling your friends, but it would also be great at a renaissance faire guess that tune edition. I mean just imagine sitting around with your ale in hand sitting around the fire and laughing about these wonderfully jaunty tunes!
The entire YouTube for Hildegard Von Blingin’ is one I frequent. Known for “Medieval $hitposting, also fondly known as Bardcore, for the discerning clergyman, noble, or muck-gathering peasant” there’s really no way you can go wrong by subscribing to their channel.
