First Full-Length ‘She-Ra’ Trailer Reveals Complex and Beautiful Story

Okay, now I’m excited for the new She-Ra and the Princesses of Power after seeing this new full-length trailer.

Even if the thumbnail for the video reminds me of this screen cap from Sailor Moon R: Promise of the Rose film.

In my last breakdown of the teaser trailer that dropped last month, I’d made mention of how the new She-Ra really shows that much of the art team was inspired by the late 90s surrealist (sword fighting) anime Revolutionary Girl Utena. I’d jokingly mentioned that She-Ra’s costume janked Utena’s right down to the bike shorts. Which was a tongue in cheek reference. But now, they’re still really showing that influence not only with the opening sword practice scene in a stylized arena, but by the way Adora’s hair grows when she grabs the magic sword.

Yes, I realize Adora’s hair sort of grows in the original show, but the composition of the shot really screams Adolescence of Utena to me. Not a bad thing– I’m just really surprised that I’m able to so clearly nail these visual references.

    I mean…come on.

The story seems to resemble the richness and complexity of a show like Avatar: The Last Airbender or The Legend of Korra. A world corrupted needs a group of rebels to use their chosen magic to save everyone. It’s a familiar premise, but these characters seem layered and charming.

She-Ra and the Princesses of Power will debut on Netflix on November 16th.
