Behind every great hit song is… as it turns out often a team of unsung writers known as “Hitmakers” and the new Netflix docuseries of the same name is shoving them into the spotlight. Set against a songwriting camp, twelve hit songwriters who you may or may never have heard of are thrown together to write songs for some of the biggest talent out there today.  The series is a fascinating (if oh so slightly dramatized) look into these real intensives that exist. Record labels will fly these artisans out to fabulous locations… only to lock them in studios to…

Netflix’s “Perfect Match” returns, and is bigger and better than ever. The dating show traditionally has tried to pair up alumni of other Netflix series in a “Love Island” meets “Bachelor in Paradise” esque format. But this season brings an infusion of new blood, for this is one of the first times the Netflix Reality Universe has expanded beyond home grown talent. The show has contestants couple up and then re-couple (and then re-re-couple) in an attempt to find their perfect match. Buckle up for non-stop laughs in the new “The Naked Gun” film. Building off the universe of the Police Squad featuring the late great Leslie Nielsen, “The Naked Gun” has Liam Neeson step into the role of Frank Drebin Jr.. One could not ask for a more perfect casting as the straight man to the absurd world built out by director Akiva Schaffer (“Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” The Lonely Island) and fellow writers Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. While the plot of the film is paper thin at best, it jam-packs every minute with jokes. It’s a wonderful reminder…

Netflix’s “Building the Band” is a hodgepodge of reality formats that somehow meld together into a thoroughly entertaining competition show. It’s as if their smash hit “Love is Blind” had a beautiful baby with “The Voice” and “X Factor.” Singers audition for each other sight unseen and have to decide to form into groups without ever getting to see their bandmates.  We do have to note, for the most part, all of the contestants fit into a certain set of visual and age parameters. While the show knows that talent can come in any form, it does seem to have…

James Gunn’s “Superman” brings us a comfortable hero confronting painfully uncomfortable times. While the titular hero will always remain bound by the fundamental “goodness” and somewhat simplicity of the character, this latest iteration goes from good to great as a byproduct of the release timing. A hero born of the World War 2 era, Superman has always felt somewhat constrained by his paragon of goodness. As remakes have come out and we’ve seen times of (mild) peace, we’ve seen heroes with more complex morality rise to popularity. Yet of late we’ve fallen into what feels like the darkest timeline, and…
