“The Golden Girls” Hits Disney+ in the UK This Summer

Hope you like stories about St. Olaf, because you’re about to hear a lot more of them in the UK. According to various sources, the arrival of “The Golden Girls” this summer to Disney Plus was heralded in a Disney press conference regarding their upcoming Star streaming program.

In the United States, “The Golden Girls” is viewable on Hulu, a streaming platform that is owned by Disney. However outside of the US, Hulu is currently only available primarily in Japan. Instead of further expanding the brand internationally, Disney has opted to create a new package for films and television shows under the name of Star. This subsection of Disney Plus will be launched on February 23rd in various areas of Europe, Canada, Australia and other markets.

No specific date was given for when the adventures and exploits of Rose, Blanche, Dorothy, and Sophia will be available on Star aside from the time frame of “this summer.” Given how the program has been around in syndication since its finale in 1992, another few months certainly isn’t going to diminish the show’s surprisingly continued relevance.

For the uninitiated, “The Golden Girls” is a Sitcom that ran for seven seasons from 1985 to 1992 and starred Beatrice Arthur as Dorothy Zbornak, Rue McClanahan as Blanche Devereaux, Betty White as Rose Nylund, and Estelle Getty as Dorothy’s mother, Sophia Petrillo. As the “golden” in the name implies, the girls are all in their 50’s and 60’s with Sophia being an octogenarian. The four of them live together in Miami with their distinct personality traits leading to various shenanigans.

A full list of reasons for why you should consider giving “The Golden Girls” a complete watchthrough deservers its own article, but its enduring legacy is built on performances than won each of the four starring ladies an Emmy, and writing from Christopher Lloyd (not to be confused with the “Back to the Future” actor) who would later go on to create “Modern Family“.

If you have the chance to watch the show now through Hulu, televised reruns, or DVD sets, we strongly encourage you to give the show a chance. Meanwhile, if you don’t have those options and live in a region where Star is coming to Disney Plus, you now have seven seasons of laughs to look forward to this summer.
