Are you ready for an authorized look at Stars Hollow? More than 25 years after its initial premiere, HBO Max is developing a documentary about the TV show Gilmore Girls. In Waves and War‘s Bonni Cohen will direct the currently untitled project.
Gilmore Girls ran from 2000 to 2007 and told the story of 30-something single mom Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) raising her teenage daughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). The documentary will be told by creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. They’ll be joined by various, yet-to-be-identified cast and crew. As it stands, Graham is the only core cast member that is confirmed. But it’s assumed people like Bledel, Melissa McCarthy, Scott Patterson, Keiko Agena, and others will make appearances.
When it was on the air, the show was a cross-generational hit. Many tweens/teens identified with Rory, while plenty of parents saw themselves in Lorelai, Emily (Kelly Bishop), and Richard (Edward Herrmann). So much so that in 2016 Netflix did Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, a revival that consisted of four 90-minute episodes. In it, we get to catch up with Lorelai, Rory, Lane (Agena), Luke (Patterson), and the rest of the Stars Hollow gang almost a decade later.
Despite the show’s large and dedicated fan base, this will be the first documentary ever on the series itself. There is currently no set release window for this project, but we’ll keep you posted as updates become available.
