Christopher Landon to Adapt Film Version of “The Final Girl Support Group”

The concept of the “final girl” is one that horror fans are very well acquainted with. If you don’t know the phrase then it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds. Imagine a horror movie where a bunch of people die. Eventually there has to be only one victim/survivor left. Often times, it’s a girl. She’s the final girl. Laurie from Halloween, Ripley in Alien, Alice in the first Friday the 13th; pick your favorite from them and more. They’re survivors of horrible atrocities and the inspiration for the book, The Final Girl Support Group. Soon it’s going to become a movie unto itself with Christopher Landon at the helm.

Christopher Landon Knows a Final Girl When He Sees Them

This is one of those great horror marriages, so to say. Landon has made a strong name for himself in the genre as a writer and director. He penned Paranormal Activity 2 through to 4 and wrote and directed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. Outside of that franchise he brought us both Happy Death Day films in addition to Freaky. So, yeah, that’s one hell of a pedigree to say the least. It’s the kind of experience and artistic touch that’s necessary for adapting a beloved novel like The Final Girl Support Group.

Written by Grady Hendrix and published in 2021, the book doubles as love letter to horror fans. The more you know about horror films, the more you’ll get out of it. The titular final girls are all based off of characters in horror movies. They come together to find a way to manage their trauma, but, as you can imagine, things don’t go well. More trauma, more murder, more horror. There’s a lot to dive into with the concept and explore the psychological impact of violence along with female empowerment.

The film adaptation project has been gestating for a while. It was originally supposed to be on HBO Max with Charlize Theron attached to produce. That somehow went by the wayside and the project was moved to be with Paramount. Hendrix is also on board to serve as an executive producer on the film. Hopefully it lands his seal of approval in order to live up to the novel.

Other details are scarce at the moment. We’re really excited to see what happens with the casting decisions. This could be a great chance to bring in some new scream queens and mix it up with a veteran or two if they want to go that route. It’s a project we are fairly invested in the outcome of. We’ll also continue to keep you updated as the project moves further along in its development.
