    IGCSE Biology: 7 Topics That Cost Students the Most Marks

    IGCSE Biology has a reputation for being the most memorisable of the three sciences. That reputation causes a lot of damage.

    Students revise by re-reading, feel confident, and then lose marks in places that have nothing to do with how much they remembered.

    These are the seven topics where that happens most consistently, and what to do about each.

    1. Osmosis and Diffusion

    Almost every student can define both. Far fewer can apply them to an unfamiliar situation, which is what the papers actually ask.

    The usual failure is describing water moving from high concentration to low concentration without specifying water potential, or forgetting that osmosis requires a partially permeable membrane.

    Exact terminology requirements differ between specifications, so check the wording used on your own. Full syllabus documents are published by Cambridge International and are worth reading directly rather than relying on a revision guide’s paraphrase.

    The fix: Practise explaining osmosis in three unfamiliar contexts, a plant cell in salt water, a red blood cell in distilled water, and a potato strip experiment. Same principle, three vocabularies.

    2. Enzymes and the Temperature Graph

    Everyone can draw the curve. The marks are in explaining both halves of it correctly.

    Below the optimum, rate increases because of increased kinetic energy and more frequent successful collisions. Above it, the enzyme denatures, the active site changes shape and the substrate no longer fits.

    The most common error in the entire topic is writing that the enzyme is killed. Enzymes are proteins. They are not alive, and examiners do not award the mark.

    The fix: Learn denatured, not killed or destroyed. Always mention the active site changing shape.     3. Photosynthesis and Respiration Together

    Separately, these are manageable. Together, they cause reliable confusion.

    Students mix up the equations, forget that plants respire continuously as well as photosynthesise, and struggle with questions about net gas exchange at different light intensities.

    That last point is the one examiners return to repeatedly. At low light, a plant respires more than it photosynthesises. At the compensation point the two are equal. Above it, photosynthesis dominates.

    The fix: Write both equations side by side and note that one is the reverse of the other. Then work three questions on net gas exchange at varying light intensity.

    4. Transport in Plants

    Xylem and phloem get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive because this topic appears in almost every paper.

    Xylem carries water and minerals upward only, in dead hollow vessels, driven by transpiration. Phloem carries dissolved sugars in both directions, in living tissue, by translocation.

    The transpiration questions add a second layer: students often list factors affecting transpiration rate without explaining the mechanism behind each one.

    The fix: Memorise one distinguishing detail per vessel. Xylem is dead, phloem is alive. Everything else follows from that.

    5. Inheritance and Genetic Diagrams

    Students lose marks here on presentation rather than understanding.

    Punnett squares are drawn without labelling parental genotypes. Phenotype ratios are given without stating which phenotype belongs to which. Key terms, homozygous, heterozygous, allele, gene, are used interchangeably when they mean different things.

    The genetics itself is usually sound. The communication is not.

    The fix: Always label parental genotypes, gametes, offspring genotypes, then phenotypes. Four rows, every time, even when the answer seems obvious.

    6. Homeostasis

    This topic is abstract, and students often learn examples without learning the underlying principle.

    Negative feedback is the concept being assessed: a change is detected, a response is triggered, the change is reversed, and the response stops.

    Thermoregulation and blood glucose control are the standard examples, but questions frequently present an unfamiliar one to test whether the principle transferred.

    The fix: Learn the four-stage negative feedback loop as a template, then fit each example into it rather than memorising examples separately.

    7. Ecology and the Extended-Answer Questions

    Ecology looks like the easiest topic on the syllabus and carries some of the longest questions on the paper.

    Food chains and energy transfer are straightforward. Explaining why energy is lost between trophic levels, in detail, for four or six marks, is where students run out of material.

    The answer needs several distinct points: energy lost in respiration, in heat, in undigested material, and in parts not consumed.

    The fix: For any extended-answer ecology question, count the marks and produce that many distinct points. Four marks means four separate reasons, not one reason explained at length.

    Bonus: Coordination and Response

    This one did not make the main list only because it appears less frequently. When it does appear, it causes disproportionate damage.

    Students confuse nervous and hormonal control constantly. Nervous responses are fast, short-lived and travel via neurones to specific targets. Hormonal responses are slower, longer-lasting and travel in the blood to multiple targets.

    Reflex arc questions are the other reliable loss. The sequence of stimulus, receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone, motor neurone, effector, response must be in order and complete. Missing the relay neurone is the single most common omission.

    The fix: Learn the reflex arc as a fixed seven-word sequence and write it out from memory until it is automatic. Then practise applying it to unfamiliar stimuli.

    How to Revise This Subject Properly

    Since the failures above are precision failures rather than knowledge failures, the revision method matters more than the hours.

    Re-reading notes is the most popular method and close to the least effective. It produces familiarity, which feels like knowledge and is not.

    What works better is retrieval. Close the book, write out what you know, then check. The gaps you find are the actual revision list.

    Past papers should be worked with the mark scheme open beside you, not afterwards. The objective early on is to learn what earns marks, not to test yourself. Testing comes later, under timed conditions.

    Pay specific attention to command words. Describe, explain, compare and suggest require different answers, and a perfectly correct description scores nothing on an explain question.

    Finally, count the marks before writing. Four marks means four distinct points. Students who write one excellent point at length on a four-mark question are the most consistently under-rewarded group in the subject.

    The Pattern Across All Seven

    Look at these together and something becomes obvious. Almost none of them are knowledge failures.

    They are precision failures: wrong word, missing label, principle not transferred, insufficient distinct points for the marks available.

    Which is genuinely encouraging, because precision is far quicker to fix than understanding.

    Work with a past paper and its mark scheme open together, and most of these close within a few weeks.
