Oh The Blair Witch Project. We’ve talked before about how it never needed to be a franchise. But If ever there was a film that could’ve had an interesting series built around it and failed miserably, this was it. There was such a mythos built up for, and in the movie, and then it was squandered. Either go for it or don’t, and in this case they clearly didn’t. We also reported that the series was coming back with some of the original cast on board to produce. We’ve got one better for you now, we’ve got a release date for you.

It’s Been a While
The last we’ve heard of the Blair Witch as a franchise was in 2019. That’s when Blooper Team dropped the fairly middling survival horror game on the world. If you’re looking for a film though, you have to go back to 2016. Blair Witch was directed by Adam Wingert to moderate success. It’s low budget kept it from losing money, but it still only grossed around $45 million on a budget of $5 million. Given how Hollywood is so apt to capitalizing on things that make money, seems like this didn’t make enough to keep the franchise going.
Dylan Clark is hoping to change that. He’s directing the new entry in the series with the film set to drop on September 24th, 2027. That’s just about the right time for spooky season next year. Details about the film’s plot have been kept under wraps. Probably a good thing honestly since mystique was a big part of the initial film’s success. It would be extremely hard to replicate that sense of wonder the original installment managed to cook up. The combination of a burgeoning internet and naivety to online hoaxes did wonders for drawing people in.

Expectations For the Future
What do we have now? The internet is a much different place. People are used to being deceived and AI has people questioning everything they see anyway. Good luck trying to stealth market a film in that environment! Maybe that’s why they’re leaning on original actors Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams being involved in the production. If you can’t replicate the past you can at least tie back into it. When we find out more information about the film, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, set your calendar for September 24th, 2027.
