Netflix Announces “Lord of the Flies” Release Date

Of the many books that children and teens are introduced to in school, few have the impact of Lord of the Flies. The 1954 novel by William Golding tells a harrowing tale that has been reused in other media. A plane crash ends up stranding a group of schoolboys on a deserted island. Left alone, they must fend for themselves to survive. What happens is a devolution of human nature in primal and violent ways. Several adaptations have been made over the years, and one of them is coming to Netflix.

This most recent version of Lord of the Flies has actually already seen airtime in the UK. At the time of its airing in February, we were reporting on it and its acquisition. The four-part series aired on the BBC, with each episode dedicated to one of four boys. Ralph, Piggy, Jack, and Simon were followed through the events of the novel, with this adaptation being written by Jack Thorne. The miniseries received strong reviews for its story and casting. Perhaps the best part, too, it’s just a four-episode project; it can’t be stretched out into an overlong series.

    When Does it Air?

Unless you want to try to find a way to watch it through the BBC, or if you’re visiting the UK, you’ll have to wait a bit longer for it to air in the States. Netflix is set to premiere it on May 4th, 2026. May the fourth is generally reserved for Star Wars news, but we suppose island-stranded children going feral is fun too. In case you’re interested in the production values, the series also has Hans Zimmer attached as a composer. Zimmer has a filmography to die for, including many Christopher Nolan films and the more recent Dune trilogy.

Lord of the Flies is a classic for a reason. The previous film adaptations got a lot of things right, but are limited by their run times. This is the first series adaptation, and based on reviews, it seems it was the right adaptation. You can count us among the ones who will be streaming it when Netflix drops it on May 4th.
