Believe it or not its been almost four and a half years since The Batman hit theaters. The Matt Reeves-directed version of the Bat starred Robert Pattinson in the titular role. Strong reviews and a tidy box office profit ensured more films would be on the way. That’s still the case, but we’ve been waiting a while. Now we’ve found out we’re going to have to wait even longer.
Before today, we were under the impression that The Batman: Part II was going to be swooping into theaters on October 1st, 2027. That’s not the case now. Even that date would’ve been a hell of a wait for a sequel. That’s five and a half years. Christopher Nolan did a whole trilogy in seven years with The Prestige and Inception sandwiched in between them. Obviously, different directors have different styles, but seriously?
The next time we’ll see Pattinson in the Batsuit will be on February 18th, 2028. Though Reeves, at the very least, shared some footage of what we can expect on his Vimeo channel.
Also, while it may not be Batman himself, we did get The Penguin miniseries in 2024. Even though it wasn’t exactly a sequel in terms of Bruce Wayne/Batman’s story, it did still flesh out the world more. It also gave Colin Farrell even more time to shine in his performance of the titular character. So it’s not as if we’ve been completely denied some Batman content in the gap between films.
It’s not exactly positive news for DC fans. Between this delay and Supergirl being a letdown, things are not lifting off the way James Gunn would have wanted. Now, reportedly, Reeves’ take on Batman is a separate entity from the other DC entries. Hopefully it continues to stand fine on its own. How this falls into the plans of the DCU in general, though, adds more questions to things. We’ll continue to keep you posted. Same bat time, same bat channel.
