If you are unfamiliar with this amazing work by Neil Gaiman, now is the time to familiarize yourself and get hyped for this upcoming television series.

For those of you who are aware of this dark graphic novel, yes, the Sandman is indeed finally becoming a series after being greenlit for Netflix to take it under it’s wing. After Netflix adopted the show Lucifer, which was in itself a Sandman spin-off, it is absolutely thrilling to find that they have taken up the responsibility of providing us with a Sandman television series.

If you are worried about this project after the multiple failed attempts by New Line who were trying to create a movie based on the graphic novels, don’t be. A TV series will allow for this (originally) 75 issue series to properly be spun out in much better a fashion than a singular movie would. Also, sources familiar with the deal note that this is the most expensive TV series that DC Entertainment has ever done, making it clear that this will be a project taken most seriously.

Netflix having snatched up the pitch for this series after it had been turned down by many others including HBO due to the huge price tag attached.
To further ease any worries, Neil Gaiman himself will also be attached to the project as an executive producer with Allan Heinberg (Wonder Woman, ABC’s The Catch, Grey’s Anatomy) set to write and serve as showrunner. David Goyer will be accompanying Gaiman as executive producer as well.

This will not be Gaiman’s first adaptation to the screen as American Gods and Good Omens have both been successful television series based on Gaiman’s novels.

The critically acclaimed graphic novels was one of the first few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list. Falling within the dark fantasy genre, the comic book also falls into  urban fantasy, epic fantasy, and historical drama by using mythology, legends, historical figures and occult culture. In its earliest story arcs, the Sandman existed primarily in the DC Universe, and as many DC characters made appearances or were mentioned. Later, the series would reference the DCU less often, while continuing to exist in the same universe.
