Building Strong Futures for DC Youth Through Sports and Mentorship

By The Protégé Project | Youth Empowerment & Community Development in Washington, DC

Across Washington, DC, many young people face challenges that go far beyond the classroom. Limited access to mentorship, structured activities, and positive role models can make it harder for youth to reach their full potential. The Protégé Project was created to change that reality by using sports as a foundation for mentorship, education, and personal growth.

Founded in 2017, the organization has become a trusted community resource for boys ages 6–18, offering a safe, supportive environment where youth can develop confidence, discipline, and leadership skills that last a lifetime.

    A Community-Driven Vision

The Protégé Project was founded by Clementina Maduforo, whose background in sports officiating and youth engagement inspired her to create a program that blends athletics with mentorship. What began as informal basketball sessions quickly evolved into a structured nonprofit initiative supported by families, community leaders, and local partners.

Operating primarily out of Washington, DC recreation centers, the program now serves more than 100 youth each year. Its growth reflects a deep community need for programs that nurture both athletic ability and personal development.

    More Than a Game

At the heart of The Protégé Project is the belief that sports can teach lessons far beyond the court. While basketball is a central activity, the organization focuses just as strongly on character building, teamwork, and accountability.

    Participants learn how to:

    • Set and achieve personal goals
    • Communicate effectively with peers and mentors
    • Develop emotional resilience and self-discipline
    • Balance academics with extracurricular commitments

The program emphasizes that success is not only measured by points scored, but by growth in attitude, responsibility, and self-belief.

    Mentorship That Makes a Difference

One of the defining strengths of The Protégé Project is its mentorship model. Coaches and volunteers serve as consistent, positive role models, guiding youth through challenges both in sports and in life. Mentors help participants navigate school responsibilities, social pressures, and decision-making, creating trust-based relationships that often extend for years.

Former participants frequently return as mentors and volunteers, reinforcing a powerful cycle of leadership and community investment.

    Education, Wellness, and Life Skills

In addition to sports training, The Protégé Project integrates academic enrichment and wellness education into its programming. Study sessions, tutoring support, and discussions around health and nutrition help participants build habits that support long-term success.

By addressing the whole child — physically, mentally, and emotionally — the program prepares youth for challenges well beyond their athletic years.

How the Community Can Support the Mission

The Protégé Project’s impact is made possible through the support of donors, sponsors, and volunteers who believe in empowering the next generation. Contributions help fund essential resources such as:

    • Sports equipment and uniforms
    • Transportation to games and community events
    • Educational materials and tutoring programs
    • Healthy meals and snacks during practices
    • Workshops focused on leadership and life skills

Every contribution directly supports programs that keep youth engaged, motivated, and safe.

    Join the Movement

The Protégé Project continues to grow, driven by a shared belief that every young person deserves opportunity, guidance, and community support. Parents, educators, local businesses, and volunteers all play an important role in shaping brighter futures for DC youth.
