‘Death Stranding’ Release Date Means Bad News for ‘The Last of Us 2’

E3 2019 is quickly approaching and with it a plethora of anticipated game announcements. Among them, Death Stranding stands out as one of the biggest. Hideo Kojima’s main project after the cancelled Silent Hills game, Death Stranding is a mysterious but interesting story starring Norman Reedus. After a long wait, the game has finally gotten a release date of November 8, 2019. While this is great news for Kojima fans, it isn’t such great news for eager fans of the The Last of Us Two.

Death Stranding’s November 8 release means it will fill the spot of the PS4’s big Fall exclusive. As a result, The Last of Us 2 has been pushed backed to early 2020 according to Kotaku’s Jason Schreier. This would make a lot of sense for PlayStation, as it would set The Last of Us 2 as the perfect exclusive for the early 2020 quarter. The release date was revealed in an extensive Death Stranding teaser on Twitch. The game is also reportedly scheduled to release for the PS5 in the near future.

PlayStation’s announcement means we can expect to play Kojima’s title in just over five months. Death Stranding pre-order details have already appeared on the PlayStation store. Meanwhile, there is rumor that Sony is planning another State of Play later this week that will focus entirely on The Last of Us 2. However, the lack of official confirmation from PlayStation on top of the Death Stranding announcement makes this seem less likely.

The Last of Us 2 is supposedly in its final stages of development, though it appears we will still not see it for some time. In the meantime, it seems glowing babies and possessed soldiers will be taking the spotlight this fall. Hopefully, Naughty Dog fans will be able to reunite with their favorite father-daughter pair early next year.
