Pixar’s New “Onward” Trailer Mixes the Magical with the Mundane

Toy Story 4 is coming out this month and will wrap up that franchise. But Pixar has more movies waiting in the wings. They have just released a trailer for their upcoming film Onward. The film is a suburban fantasy and will tell the story of two elf brothers, Barley and Ian Lightfoot, who go on a quest to see if there is still magic left in their world. The brothers will be voiced by Marvel alums Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) and Tom Holland (Spider-Man). Also voicing characters are Julia Louis-Dreyfus (as the brothers’ mom) and Octavia Spencer.

Onward is written and directed by Dan Scanlon (Monsters University) who said the film is“a mix of the fantastic and the everyday, [with] elves, sprites and pretty much anything that would be on the side of a van in the ’70s.” He also said, “This film was inspired by my own relationship with my brother.” The trailer doesn’t reveal much of the film’s plot but does highlight the fantasy world that has become much more mundane, with centaurs delivering papers, garden gnomes doing yard work, and feral unicorns scavenging in garbage cans.

Onward will be released March 6, 2020.

I am still waiting for that blue police box to take me on a star trek to a galaxy far, far away. Until then I will have to content myself with fantasy and sci-fi adventures from books, movies, and TV shows.
