Guillermo del Toro Wants to do “Phantom of the Opera” Movie

Few tales have stood the test of time like Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel “The Phantom of the Opera.” This story of longing, love, and alienation has been adapted for the stage and screen countless times. But like Jello, there is always room for more.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has expressed interest in putting his own spin on the iconic story.

“It’s such a classic tale, but I would do it differently,” Del Toro told Inverse. “I have a couple of ideas but for now, I’m going into crime and stop-motion.”

Del Toro has always been vocal about his love for classical Gothic horror and old-school misunderstood monster films. Even making an unofficial “Creature from the Black Lagoon” movie with the Oscar-winning “The Shape of Water” when plans with Universal fell through.

With his adaptation of “Frankenstein” about to hit Netflix on November 7th, after a small theatrical run, his track record speaks for itself.

But del Toro was very clear, even if a “The Phantom of the Opera” film were to come to fruition, it wouldn’t be for some time. You can check out the interview with the filmmaker below:
