Script Nearly Finished for “The Goonies” Sequel

When we heard that Warner Bros. wanted to double down on some of their existing intellectual property, we were prepared for things from the DC universe or “Harry Potter.” We weren’t actually expecting that a sequel to “The Goonies“ would actually be in the works. Sure, there were rumors, but would they actually go through with it? Apparently, they would. Potsy Ponciroli is handling the script, and apparently, it’s almost done.

    “The Goonies” Amblin Entertainment

It’s not like the original “Goonies” needed a sequel. One could say the original was “Good Enough.” (A Cyndi Lauper joke.) But the misadventures of Mikey, Mouth, Chunk, and the rest, in search for the treasure of One-Eyed Willy and battling the Fratellis was a perfectly fine stand-alone feature. Could it be interesting to see what those characters are up to these days? Well sure, if that’s the direction they want to go with it. Or maybe it’ll be a whole new young cast taking over the roles for another adventure.

Ponciroli has “turned in a first draft, which was very well received, and I’m on a second draft and I’m about 95% done with that so we’re moving in the right direction. I’d never redo ‘The Goonies.’ To me it was a story that never ended so this is the movie I want to see as one of its biggest fans.” He’s aware that it’s easy for these legacy sequels or remakes to retread old ground. So hopefully, that’ll keep the project from possibly being stale nostalgia bait.

Very little is known about the movie at this point. There are no actors or a director attached yet. All we know is Warner Bros. Pictures is behind the production, along with Steven Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment. (He wrote the original film with Chris Columbus, who is also producing.) The original was directed by the late, great Richard Donner who had a wonderful eye for action and amazing set pieces. His legacy will be hard to live up to, as will the film itself, but hopefully Ponciroli’s reverence for “The Goonies” will see it through to a welcome return.
